What is Shell Material in Clothing Made Of?

Learn more about what softshell jacket material is made of and shop custom softshell jackets

As temperatures start dipping for the fall and winter seasons, many of us start digging out our cold-weather clothes. We also start deciding what new wardrobe pieces we need to buy, so we can best handle the elements . . . especially if we’ll be working or playing outdoors. The fall season is the perfect time for employers to order custom logo jackets for the men and women on their teams. Before you order, you’ll need to choose between soft shell or hard shell options for your custom corporate jackets.

In this article, we’ll talk about different branded jacket materials and list some of Merchology’s top options for corporate outerwear.

What is a Shell Layer?

“Shell” is the term for the outer layer of clothing you wear to protect from water and wind. It is often worn over a base layer and mid-layer. Corporate logo shell jackets feature varying levels of protection and breathability. They may or may not include insulated lining for added warmth.

What is Shell Material Made Of?

There are two main types of custom shell jackets: soft shell and hard shell. There is no mandated industry standard for these designations, but there are common materials used for each. These materials have different functions that can help you decide which shell type is best for your employees.

Custom hard shell jackets are generally bonded with a thin membrane made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), a material that was invented in the 1960s by Gor-Tex. There is a lot of complicated science behind this technology (which is similar to the substance called Teflon). But here’s what you can expect from custom hard shell jackets:

  • Waterproof: They repel water effectively even in heavy precipitation.
  • Wind-proof: These rugged materials shield you from harsh, frigid winds.
  • Rigidity: The trade-off of this protection is a stiffer fabric with less breathability than soft shells.
  • Best for extreme conditions: Choose hard shell jackets for team members who spend long hours working or playing in cold, wind, rain, and snow.

Soft shell jackets, on the other hand, are made of nylon or polyester that is coated with a fluorocarbon-based Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish. They often feature a soft brushed lining. Here’s what you can expect from corporate soft shell jackets:

  • Water-resistance: While not as protective as hard shells, soft shells shield from light rain and snow.
  • Wind-resistance (sometimes): Some soft shells include a wind-blocking membrane in addition to the DWR coating.
  • All-day comfort: These jackets are much more flexible than hard shells. Their higher breathability can prevent excess sweating–an important feature, since moisture in inner layers can contribute to hypothermia
  • Best for milder conditions and longer wear: Soft shell jackets may not be enough for working all day in an ice storm, but they are perfect for shorter periods of time in cold temps or light precipitation.
