The Marmot Story
The Marmot story began way back in 1971 when co-founders Dave Huntley and Eric Reynolds started creating their own winter jackets and sleeping bags in their dorm room at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The company started as a social club at UC Santa Cruz, called the Marmot Club. To become a member of the Marmot Club, you had to scale a mountain with another member of the Marmot Club.
After college, Huntley and Reynolds moved the business, now called Marmot Mountain Works, to a vacant dry goods store in Durango, Colorado. In 1974 the company got it’s big break when Clint Eastwood wore a Marmot parka in a film called The Eiger Sanction. Two years later, Marmot became the first outdoors brand to use GORE-TEX in their gear and continued to be an innovator in the industry for decades to come.
